Special Collectable Item: Candy Cane Shard

A Candy Cane Shard is a special item only available during the Wintersday special event. They are classed as both a collectable drop and a Salvage Item.

While there is a section later in the guide regarding other collectable items, this one is the most important and I wanted it to be near the top.

How do I acquire them?
  • Every monster, throughout the game during Wintersday event
  • Three candy cane shards are awarded to each member of the winning team in PvP snowball fights.
  • Random drops during Wintersday quests
  • Wintersday quest rewards

What are they used for?
  • You can exchange 5 candy cane shards for a 1 Wintersday Gift by speaking to a Wintersday Gift Giver [Collector].
  • You require 1 candy cane shard for each 9-rings game round you play during the Grand Finale.
  • You also give 9 or 12 candy cane shards to Candysmiths who will craft you Candy Cane Weapons in return. More details are given later in the guide, or search for Candysmiths.

8v8 ATS-style Snowball Tournaments!

This is just a reminder about Snowball Automated Tournaments. Remember that the same restrictions for guild membership also applies for the Snowball ATs.

I'm not an expert when it comes to all things PvP, so please excuse me if this section is lacking information. If anyone would like to contribute I'd be very grateful - RTS

Playing Tips
  • Presents spawn every 30 seconds, starting 15 seconds into the match. Presents can spawn in front of the waterfall in the south west and cave in the north east, or at the top of the cliffs behind them.
  • Dwayna is to the east, north of the red resurrection shrine. Grenth is west, to the south of the blue resurrection shrine.
  • Players must pick up presents and carry them to the avatar of "their" god.
  • The victors will be decided by which team brings 5 Presents to their god's avatar first. In the event of a tie both teams lose.
  • There are fake presents that explode and do 250 damage to the player who picked it up. Roughly 1 in 3 presents are fake, there is no way to distinguish them from regular presents without picking them up.
  • Presents reduce movement speed to roughly 50%.
  • Presents are dropped if the player holding it is knocked down.
  • Players who die resurrect every 5 seconds
  • Dying in the arena does not count as a real death. This means people aiming for the Survivor title can die in the arena without losing their progress.
  • Some of your weapon stats do work in snowball fights. Vamp mods for example make you lose health, a monk using enchantment mod gets a longer ice breaker, shields with condition duration reduction work when you get crippled by avalanche or poisoned by yellow snow or dazed by hidden rock.

Prizes
  • 100 Balthazar Faction for each unique kill
  • 50 Balthazar Faction and 3 Candy Cane Shards for winning
  • 50 Balthazar Faction for a Flawless Victory
  • 50 Balthazar Faction for 5 and 10 Consecutive Wins
  • Gladiator points are NOT awarded to teams winning 10 times in a row.
  • 10 points toward the Gamer title track are awarded for each victory

Do not map travel otherwise you will need to start all over again!

The following map shows the location of the Freezie Wannabes:

Or to save yourself some trouble, by entering from Blacktide Den. This way you won't have to meet with the Grentch Squad, which is near the Jokanur Diggings entrance.

The quest only requires you to kill all the mobs guarding the Wintersday stocking, so this saves time. The following map shows how:

Lion's Arch and Kamadan, Jewel of Istan

Takes place in The Underworld

Rift Warden: In Grenth's Defense (Grenth)

This is a solo quest.

The skills are the same ones used in the PvP Snowball fights so please refer to the previous section for more details.

Speak to the Rift Warden in Lion's Arch or Kamadan when you are ready to defend the Underworld.
  1. Destroy all followers of Dwayna who attempt to breach the Underworld. They must not reclaim the stolen presents.
  2. See Rift Warden for your reward.
  3. *BONUS*: Survive for as long as possible.
  • Upon entering the Underworld, all other party members are removed and your skills are replaced with the snow fighting skills.
  • You must defend the stolen presents from 24 level 15 Snowmen of various professions, as well as a level 19 boss named Freezie.
  • Using Yellow Snow to remove conditions is vital to your success.
  • Also you should consider using a Ritualist who has access to the skill "Jack Frost". Cast Jack Frost and simply keep it up all times to take damage and use Hidden Rock and then a Snowball to shut the enemy down.
  • BONUS - Upon finishing the mission an Avatar of Grenth appears. It offers to send you back to town or you can try the bonus, which is to defend the presents for as long as possible. There are 6 rounds each containing six Snowmen you need to fight and defeat. You receive one Candy Cane Shard for each completed wave.
  • Drops include Candy Cane Shards and Globs of Frozen Ectoplasm. Details of what these items can be used for is explained later in this guide.

Rift Warden: You're a Mean One, Mr. Grenth (Dwayna)

This is a solo quest.

The skills are the same ones used in the PvP Snowball fights so please refer to the previous section for more details.

Speak to the Rift Warden in Lion's Arch or Kamadan when you are ready to enter the Underworld.
  1. Recover all the stolen presents. x of 5 gift bundles recovered.
  2. See Rift Warden for your reward.
  3. *BONUS*: Survive for as long as possible.
  • Upon entering the Underworld, all other party members are removed and your skills are replaced with the snow fighting skills.
  • In order to "capture" the presents you must clear the enemies from around each gift bundle and stand by it. In the Mission Progress section of your interface a bar will measure your capture progress. Red means the enemy control the gift bundle, while blue means you have captured it.
  • BONUS - Upon finishing the mission an Avatar of Dwayna appears. She offers to send you back to town or you can try the bonus, which is to survive as long as possible. There are 6 rounds of six Grentches to fight and defeat. You receive one Candy Cane Shard for each completed wave.
  • Drops include Candy Cane Shards and Globs of Frozen Ectoplasm. Details of what these items can be used for is explained later in this guide.

Takes place in the Secret Lair of the Snowmen

Rift Warden: Straight to the Heart (Grenth)

Note: Eye of the North expansion is required to access this quest.

This is a solo quest.

The skills are the same ones used in the PvP Snowball fights so please refer to the previous section for more details.

Speak to the Rift Warden in Lion's Arch or Kamadan when you are ready to enter the Secret Lair of the Snowmen.

Summary
  1. Speak to the Rift Warden when you are ready to assault the Secret Lair of the Snowmen.
  2. Roast all the snowman.

When you start the quest your find yourself at the start area of the Secret Lair of the Snowmen. Nearby will be 5 Shifty

Grentches and the boss Grentchus Magnus.

Go near them so Grentchus Magnus talks and they will begin to follow you, then head south through the open doorway where you fight some snowmen. The Grentches are pretty weak and will most likely all get killed except for Grentchus Magnus. Try to save as many of them as you can. They make great cannon fodder.

Move onward and you will encounter some more snowman, and reinforcement Grentches, who will follow you once this small fight is over.

Things begin to get harder from here on depending on how many Grentches you have left following you. Go slowly and remember to let Ice Fort recharge after every fight.

You soon move over a bridge and see a large number of snowmen beyond another bridge to your left hand side. There is a Area Map in guarded by those snowmen, but you can avoid them if you want to. Ideally your Grentch army should be getting large by this point (Between 5-10). Continue forward fighting more snowmen along the way.

You will likely get hit by a random Avalanche Environmental skill along the way, which will do 100 damage, so be careful. Wait for you and the Grentches to heal.

You will soon see another large group of Cordial Snowmen to your left, which you will need to kill in order to get the Dungeon key in order to move further on. The Angry Snowmen carries the Dungeon key, killing him also disables the two Ice Dart traps nearby. Once you have the key head forward fighting a small group of Blessed Snowmen.

The next chamber contains a small army of Pious Snowmen and a single Industrious Snowman, take them down and continue forward.

Finally you will reach Freezie and his small army of Snowmen, hopefully you will still have a large Grentch army remaining who will make short work of them all. Take them all out and finally open the Wintersday Chest that spawns to complete the quest.

Reward
  • 1,000 Experience
  • 5 Candy Cane Shards

Also upon completing the quest, a Wintersday Chest spawns as well. This will provide 5 random Wintersday items including any of the following:
  • Eggnog
  • Spiked Eggnog
  • Wintergreen Candy Cane
  • Rainbow Candy Cane
  • Peppermint Candy Cane
  • Fruitcake
  • Snowman Summoner
  • Yuletide Tonic
  • Miniature Polar Bear (extremely rare)

Thanks to Guildwiki for image

You only have 15 seconds to pick them up once you open the chest, so be quick!

Known Bugs:
  • In each quest you get a boss on your side, Freezie/Magnus Grentch for Dwayna/Grenth respectively. When they die, you get a morale boost, which is odd to say the least.
  • Grentches won't attack your target if it's outside of their range. You basically have to run to about 1/2 aggro circle distance for them to do something, which is annoying to say the least.

Rift Warden: The Strength of Snow (Dwayna)

Note: Eye of the North expansion is required to access this quest.

This is a solo quest.

The skills are the same ones used in the PvP Snowball fights so please refer to the previous section for more details.

Speak to the Rift Warden in Lion's Arch or Kamadan when you are ready to enter the Secret Lair of the Snowmen.

Summary

  1. Speak to the Rift Warden when you are ready to defend the Secret Lair of the Snowmen.

You need to make your way to Freezie in the area where he is normally located within the Secret Lair of the Snowmen Dungeon, right near the end.

Along the way you will find a group of Snowmen fighting Grentches (and losing). Help them out since it'll make things a lot easier for you to kill the Grentches with Snowmen taking hits. However any surviving Snowmen won't help afterwards, as they'll flee to the exit. A few Grentches will also pop up along the way but well before they're in your aggro circle, so you can prepare for them.

Once you get to Freezie, there will be several waves of Grentches descending upon him and his small army of Snowmen. They'll come from 2 different locations, the groups are randomly composed.

Any Snowman that are killed during these waves will automatically respawn after a short while regardless of foes in the corpse's range (for EotN NPC's to respawn under normal circumstances, there can't be a foe within earshot of the corpse, so it's not the case here).

If it gets too hot and the snowmen are going down to quickly, you can run outside of aggro range of the Grentches and dodge/Ice Fort their attacks for a while, while the Snowmen respawn under their feet, basically having the Snowmen doing all the work.

Reward message:

Reward
  • 1,000 Experience
  • 5 Candy Cane Shards

Also upon completing the quest, a Wintersday Chest spawns as well. This will provide 5 random Wintersday items including any of the following:
  • Eggnog
  • Spiked Eggnog
  • Wintergreen Candy Cane
  • Rainbow Candy Cane
  • Peppermint Candy Cane
  • Fruitcake
  • Snowman Summoner

Eye of the North (Outpost)

Lieutenant Thackeray

The Three Wise Norn

Note: Eye of the North expansion is required to access this quest.

Summary
  1. Speak with the Ebon Vanguard troops in the Eye of the North about Wintersday gifts for the Norn. Number of gifts received: 0...3
  2. Enlist the aid of Galbraum.
  3. Enlist the aid of Brartak.

  • Allyn Brand - Handful of Roasted Chestnuts -> Brartak the Glutton (just southeast of the Eye)
  • Carlisle Gavenport - Crystal Snowflake -> Helga the Cub (east of the Eye)
  • Orwin Radcliff - Vanguard Eggnog -> Galbraum the Intoxicated (in Gwen's Garden)
A map of the Norn and the route to take is as follows:

There is usually little or no fighting involved and running skills will help speed things up.

Reward
  • 1,000 XP
  • 100 Gold
  • 100 Vanguard reputation points
  • Frosty Summoning Stone
  • 10 Candy Cane Shards

Charr-broiled Plans

Note: Eye of the North expansion is required to access this quest.

Summary
  1. Speak with Brartak the Glutton outside the Eye of the North.
  2. Clear out all the Charr advancing on the Eye of the North. Number of Charr groups remaining: 9...0
  3. Speak with Lieutenant Thackeray in the Eye of the North.

Three groups of Charr are in formation outside the Eye. They are initially friendly, then turn hostile. Area of effect spells and elemental wards are helpful. Nine groups of Charr must be defeated. Try to stay off the ice, as if you remain stationary on it for a moment, you will move slower for a short time. The Charr are also affected by this, so use it to your advantage.
  • As you will be facing Charr, consider selecting your Ebon Vanguard title for the benefit of Rebel Yell.
  • The final wave of Charr also bring a Siege Devourer.
  • Consider bringing Herta with Ward against Melee to counter the large amount of Charr.

Reward
  • 2,000 XP
  • 200 Gold
  • 200 Vanguard reputation points
  • Mischievous Summoning Stone
  • 10 Candy Cane Shards

Wintersday Cheer

Note: Eye of the North expansion is required to access this quest.

Summary
  1. Speak with Gwen in the Hall of Monuments.
  2. Speak with Lieutenant Thackeray in the Eye of the North.
  3. Speak with Valgar Tempestcrafter, the Norn metallurgist.
  4. Take the family crest pendant to Lefsi Spiritchaser in Varajar Fells. Don't take Gwen with you.
  5. Protect Lefsi Spiritchaser while he imbues the pendant.
  6. Speak with Lieutenant Thackeray.
  7. Speak with Gwen.
  8. See Lieutenant Thackeray for your reward.
Travel to Olafstead to speak with Valgar, then you can either exit and head east to see Lefsi, or if you have Central Transfer Chamber on your map, it will be quicker to start from there, through Battledepths. After talking to Lefsi, he is attacked by several waves, first of Vaettir, followed by Mindblade Spectres and Smite Crawlers, then Coldfire Nights and Stalking Nights, and finally Tortured Spirits. Eventually, the ghost of Gwen's mother, Sarah will appear and the pendant is charged with the spirit of family. Map back to Eye of the North, show the pendant to Thackeray, before entering the HoM to give it to Gwen.

  • Lefsi Spiritchaser may be found where Nifling the Chained normally appears.
  • If you ignore the quest's instructions and take Gwen with you to find Lefsi, he will not appear, although the Underworld creatures will still spawn.
  • After giving the pendant to Gwen, the quest will update stating you can speak to Lieutenant Thackeray to claim your reward. You must return to the Eye of the North outpost and accept the reward there.
  • After completing this quest and Snowball Dominance, you can find a tamable Jingle Bear in Gwen's Garden.
  • Despite Underworld-specific enemies appearing in the quest, there were no reports of Globs of Ectoplasm dropping. The foes will, however, drop collectable drops and weapons exclusive to the Underworld, such as Demonic Relics or Ghostly Staves.

Reward
  • 5,000 XP
  • 500 Gold
  • 500 Vanguard reputation points
  • 10 Candy Cane Shards
  • 5 Mischievous Tonics

Casey Carpenter: Snowball Dominance

Note: Eye of the North expansion is required to access this quest.

This is a two person party quest. You may bring either another player, a hero, or a henchman.

The skills are the same ones used in the PvP Snowball fights so please refer to the previous section for more details.

Summary
  1. Speak to Casey Carpenter to enter the Ebon Vanguard Snowball Spectacular. You may only have two people in your party to enter this event.
  2. Defeat the opposing team in icy combat. When your Health reaches 0, you're out of the game!
  3. See Casey Carpenter for your reward.
During this quest, you will be under the affect of Yuletide, and your skills are replaced with Snow fighting skills. This quest takes place in a special instance of Ice Cliff Chasms, on the frozen lake in front of the Eye of the North, but the Icy Ground effect is absent.

All the NPCs from the Eye of the North, along with the three wise norn, will be split into two teams, with Artificer Mullenix as the referee. The NPCs will drop out of the game when their health is reduced to a certain amount. You must take out the entire opposing team without dying.

A fast but risky strategy is for one player to rush ahead before the main charge, aggro as much of the opposing force as possible, and catch all their snowballs on a well-timed Ice Fort. The other player should stick back and help their group attack, hopefully causing enough damage during the 10 seconds of free shots that they can win the battle.

A safe strategy to use is to stay back and let your allies fight without you. Your team is outnumbered even with your help, so they won't be able to win by themselves, but once they can take out a number of opponents before they all forfeit. Once the rest of your team is down, you can pull the remaining opponents one at a time for an easy (although time consuming) win.

A method of softening up the enemy team is to take a necromancer Hero and having it go into the middle of the enemy team and use Holiday Blues to deal AoE damage and degeneration.

  • Journey to the North will override Yuletide in this quest if your character is under LV20, giving you more health and retaining attributes. This is particularly useful for Mesmers, whose Fast Casting will affect snowball spells.
  • If you bring Charm Animal and have a pet, it still appears even though you no longer have Charm Animal. Even though the pet cannot attack, it can be attacked by the opponents. It is useful to draw some attention away from you if it manages to gain some aggro. However, as usual, the pets death will result in your skills being disabled.
  • After completing this quest and Wintersday Cheer, you can find a tamable Jingle Bear in Gwen's Garden.
  • Even though Yuletide is in effect (snowball fight skills), this WILL count as a death for survivor title. Beware!

Reward
  • 5,000 XP
  • 500 Gold
  • 500 Vanguard reputation points
  • 10 Candy Cane Shards
  • 5 Frosty Tonics

Wintersday Exclusive Pets

Jingle Bear

The Jingle Bear is a tamable pet found in Gwen's Garden after finishing all the Wintersday quests in Eye of the North during Wintersday. It has the same appearance as Ursula the White.

Thanks to Guildwiki for image

Bug:

Quote:
The bear will not spawn in 2009 even if members of the party have unlocked it previously by completing quests from earlier Wintersdays. This isn't a consistent issue and tends to clear itself if you rezone or go to the location alone.

Feature: The Winter Dwarf

The Winter Dwarf is a level 10 Dwarf Wintersday NPC found in the town of Kamadan. He is simply a joke character, guarded by a Dwarf Guard who forces him to be happy all the time!

Needless to say the Winter Dwarf begs you to ends his life, which you can do so if you wish. However in a cruel twist of fate, his death is very short lived! The Dwarf Guard will quickly bring him back to life again,

Each year various rumours are generally started regarding the Winter Dwarf. Particularly that you will get an item or hat if you killed the Dwarf a number of times, or if you waited x number of minutes. They are all false and the Dwarf does nothing but provide mild amusement.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wintersday Henchman: Enchanted Snowman

Enchanted Snowmen are special henchmen available only during Wintersday. They are Elementalists which specialise in Water Magic. Their level varies from 3 to 20 depending on location and which mode (Normal or Hard Mode) your playing the game in.

Their appearance is like this:

Thanks to Guildwiki for image

The Skills Bar they use is:
  • Aura of Restoration
  • Frozen Burst
  • Ice Prison
  • Ice Spikes
  • Resurrection Signet

Also those from Lion's Arch or Droknar's Forge also have:
  • Ward Against Harm (Elite)

Note: Try to avoid using Fire Magic or Fire Damage weapons as doing so will negate their Ice Prison hex, which is removed if mobs receive any fire damage.

They are also extremely weak against creatures that use fire damage.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Present Hunt Mini-Game

This is a mini-game played within Lion's Arch and Kamadan, Jewel of Istan.

Here's how it works:

Periodically a present will randomly spawned:

Players must quickly pick up the present and deliver it to one of the Young Children in town before any of the Grentches reach

the present and destroy it. Grentches could also destroy presents held by players if they come within adjacent range. In other words, they don't have to touch you!

When a present spawns all the Grentches in the town will run all the way to the spawn point before chasing down whoever is currently carrying the present.

Beware that Grentches move much faster than players. However if you use a Sugar Rush sweet item such as Fruitcake you can easily outrun them.

In return for the present, the child will hand the player a single Candy Cane Shard. Or if the present is handed to Scrappy

Jhim in Lion's Arch
, a Winter Gift, which will unwrap into a random Wintersday collectable item.

One of these guys after you? You better get moving!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wintersday Grand Finale

The Wintersday grand finale will take place on Wintersday itself, in Lion's Arch and Kamadan. It begins at 12:01 AM Pacific on Friday, January 1, 2010, and repeats every three hours until 12:01 AM on Saturday, January 2, 2010.

The Avatars of Grenth and Dwayna will appeared for their annual challenge. This is a game everyone in each town district can play. Which god wins will affect which hat you will be provided with.

Wintersday 9 Rings Game (Dwayna Vs Grenth)

Playing is very simple, each game costs 1 candy cane shard to play, so make sure you have some in your inventory.

This Wintersday 9 Rings finale game consists of 3 rounds per finale, 5 games of 9 Rings per round, so for a total of 15 games.

You will therefore need 15 candy cane shards per finale to play in all the games.

Players could stand in blue (Kamadan) or green (Lion's Arch) rings for Dwayna or red rings for Grenth with a Candy Cane Shard as the wager, players standing in the the chosen ring were rewarded with a Wintersday Gift.

Players within the winning and adjacent rings are awarded 2 - 5 candy cane shards depending on which ring they stood in, and also had their winning shard count added towards the score of their side's god.

Note: Any wagers of candy cane shards do count towards the Lucky and Unlucky Titles.

A table of the prizes are as follows:

Thanks to Guildwiki for image

After the match ended, the god with the highest total was considered the winner, and all players in the district were given a festival hat.

In addition to this Wintersday Gifts will appear directly in your inventory over a 15 minute period. This is to ensure that towns don't lag out during gift spawning, as they have done in previous Wintersdays.

Hat Information

Its important to point out that you do not have to join in the 9 rings game in order to get a hat. Everyone in the district gets the hat of the God who gets the most points in that district.

Generally each year there are agreements between players to ensure that that odd numbered districts are for Grenth, and even numbered districts are for Dwayna.
Bug:

Quote:
During the Grand Finale many districts didn't get the hat of their winning god. This has now been fixed but unfortunately many players have missed out on one or both of the hats. Regina Buenaobra gave the following reply in regards to the issue:

RTSFirebat needs your help!!!

Hi there! Thanks for looking at another quality (At least I hope so!) RTS event guide. I'm always looking for help with my

guides, and anyone can contribute. How so? Read on...

So what help do I need?

You can help by providing me with any of the following information, corrections and mini-guides via a forum PM. Generally I'm

requesting any of the following:

In no particular order...

  • Any information on new event quests or missions, or changes to existing event quests or missions from previous events.
  • Any pictures and details regarding new event items
  • Corrections to the guide, for example spelling.
  • Information, tips and mini how-to guides for any event mini-games.
  • Detailed information and if possible screenshots of any new in-game bugs introduced during the event.
  • Any pictures of interesting stuff such as town decorations

Information Submission Guidelines:

  • Please PM (Private Message) all information to me directly. I don't often have time to troll the tread for the info.
  • I will not accept any screenshots with interface stuff like health bars and skills bars blocking things on screen. Please

    send clear screenshots only.
  • Please do not submit any massive images. Sizes such as: 1024 x 1280 are acceptable. Please resize them to 640 x 480 first.
  • All information submitted must be accurate! Speculation and rumours won't be accepted. It also wastes everyone's

    time!

----------------------

All submissions will be of course credited in the Contributors section of the guide.

Again please make sure to submit all information via a PM (Private Message), as I won't actively be checking feedback in the

event thread.

Thank you, happy gaming

I believe fruitcake, snowman summoner and eggnog drops as a random drop (from raptors etc). Not entirely sure. Candy Cane Shards as well I think.

Great guide as always but you forgot to list the Mini Polar Bear drop from the chest spawns at the end of the rift warden quests
I sent you a Pm about it.

ctrl + f "jingle bear" yields no results.

Can we get one this year?

Some items do, the ones I'm sure about I've noted in the guide.

Oh nuts, I added the Jingle Bear in but forgot about those quests :S

Not sure, but I dont see the Snowball ATs mentioned anywhere (I know the people who are interested will know, but anyway I thought they should be mentioned within the pvp section).

There is a charmable White Jingle Moa in the Menagarie. It costs 2 Gold Zaishen Coins and 100 gold to spawn a lvl 5. Dont know if there will be a quest to get it or not, but you can charm it now Shows under exotic pets as ...

You cannot death level them and it only spawns one.
